Barry's Column
We have some great fun and some important events to talk about in this month’s column.
First, I want to talk about a crisis that exists in our businesses today – something that is costing us millions of dollars and more urgently, the deaths of thousands of people each month.
The Webster Chamber has partnered with the Penfield Chamber to host a “Town Hall of Business: Responding to the Opioid Crisis”. Additionally, some other Chambers, some civic groups, and the Town of Webster are collaborating with us to bring you this important and critical event.
The Town Hall of Business is focused on Rochester's opioid crisis and other substance use in the workplace: What do you do if you suspect someone has a substance abuse problem? What signs do you look for? How do you approach getting that person the help they need? Who do you call? Where do you refer them?
Service businesses, especially food service businesses, are especially hard hit – if you work in one of these fields, you already know the impact this crisis has on our business, our employees and their families and coworkers, and on our community.
Please save the Date: May 21st at 8:00 AM at the Webster Parks and Recreation Building – details are here in our newsletter along with the link to register. There is no cost but you MUST register to attend so we can have enough Narcan Training kits on hand.
With the potential legalization of cannabis in our State, you can be ahead of the curve by attending this critic informational and training session.
We have a great networking Eat, Drink, and Connect planned for Tuesday the 16th at GreenSpark Solar – click here for the details and don’t forget to let Barb know you are coming. This will be a great time to learn a little about solar power and network with some Chamber members.
Breakfast this month is on the 26th at the Columbus Center – we will be getting a presentation form Honor Flight – a tremendous organization doing great work for oldest of veterans. What we’ll learn in the program: how you can get someone enrolled, and how you or your business can help.
Please make sure you are participating in as many Chamber events as you can – we work hard to get you events that are timely and informative. If you have an idea, we want to hear it!
Have a fabulous and safe break week and a great Easter holiday!

The Webster Chamber of Commerce recognized Agape Physical Therapy as the April Business of the Month at the Chamber’s recent Breakfast Meeting. Frank and Ester Nowak started Agape Physical Therapy in 1987 with a passion to deliver a caring smile, kind eyes and as much expertise as it takes to get customers what they need to get better as quickly as possible. The Greek word Agape means unconditional love. At its core, that is what their practice embodies. Their passion for service to their clients is the driving force behind their love of physical therapy and quality care. Their mission is to restore movement and improve the quality of life to their patients. The dedicated staff at Agape is the backbone of successful outcomes and continued growth. Injuries, whether minor or severe, are often unexpected, but one thing you can count on is customized service to restore movement and get the patient on the road to recovery. They provide value to their customers by exceeding expectations and delivering quality, compassionate care.
Natalia Farnsworth is the Executive Director and makes sure the practice is up to date on current techniques and she spearheads their community involvement.
Agape shares time and talents with local organizations such as the Webster Chamber of Commerce, Daniel’s Run, Webster Firemen’s Carnival and the Annual Beat Brain Cancer Run.
Congratulations to Agape Physical Therapy as the Webster Chamber of Commerce’s April Business of the Month!

Empire Boulevard Construction Update
STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ANNOUNCES START OF $4 MILLION PROJECT TO ENHANCE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE ALONG EMPIRE BOULEVARD
The New York State Department of Transportation today announced the start of construction on a $4 million project to rehabilitate Empire Boulevard (also known as State Routes 941B and 404) between Helendale Road in the Town of Irondequoit and Gravel Road in the Town of Webster. The project, which includes the resurfacing of the road and the addition of new turning lanes and pedestrian accommodations, will improve driving conditions and enhance safety along this busy thoroughfare.
The project will benefit tens of thousands of motorists who use Empire Boulevard each day. In addition to resurfacing the road, the project will also add pavement markings and turning lanes at key locations to improve traffic flow and enhance safety. These include a center, two-way left turn lane between Plank Road and the Bay/Creek Street intersection and a new left turn lane for westbound traffic turning onto Plank.
The center, two-way left turn lane from Kirkland Drive toward Gravel Road will also be extended to eliminate the short section of the existing striped median.
Additionally, the project calls for repairs to manhole and drainage structures, upgraded signage and new sidewalk ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Upgrades will also be made to pedestrian and traffic signals at several locations throughout the 3.5-mile stretch of roadway.
The milling and paving work near the Interstate 590 interchange and in the commercial areas of Penfield and Webster will take place during evening and overnight hours. Two-way traffic will be maintained, though motorists should expect occasional daily single-lane closures.
Access to residential driveways and commercial businesses will also be maintained throughout the project.
Construction is expected to last through the fall.
