Barry's Column
There is so much going on these days it’s hard to decide what I might write about. I think I will skip most of the possible topics: COVID-19, reopening, the Governor, back to school?, Round 5 of the CARES Act?, the weather, the Governor, EIDL loans, the SBA, the Post Office, or the Governor.
Instead, I want to tell you a little something quirky about myself. I like to cut the grass. I know that might seem weird to some people but it’s true for me. I don’t have a ton of hobbies and I do get a lot of enjoyment out of a lot of things I do in life outside of work, particularly reading and learning (both habits I acquired from my mother), but there seems to be something about cutting the grass.
Let’s start with the fact that I have a John Deere lawn tractor that cuts the grass in 52-inch swaths, so I am sitting down for this “job” and it doesn’t take all day to cut my relatively small yard. Second, I never cut the grass the same way twice in a row; this time it’s across, next time up and down, next time diagonal, and so on. This exercises my memory to try and figure out which pattern should be next!
Next, I love the smell of cut grass. I’m not sure why, I just do. It seems fresh and clean and pleasant. And I really like to see the progression and the completed job – it feels like a task completed. Something that doesn’t always happen behind my desk and in front of a computer.
But mostly, I like the time alone, the solitude of the absence of distraction – no TV or cell phone or email or other people. I don’t even listen to music while I mow. It gives me a little reprieve from all the things in the 1st paragraph of this article. I have time to think about how wonderful my life is and how much gratitude I have to be happy and healthy, with a wonderful spouse, fantastic kids who are nearby, grandchildren who are thriving and healthy (and usually excited to see me), and my feisty (and well-read) 87-year-old mother who has weathered the depression, WWII (and more war since), a decades-long marriage, raising a half dozen children (now dozens of grand and great-grandchildren), and is toughing it through the 3rd major pandemic in her lifetime.
For some people it’s painting or woodworking or dozens of other hobbies and pastimes – time to “disconnect”, time to reflect, recharge, and enjoy. For me, it’s mowing the lawn. My neighbor called the other day and asked if I could cut her grass while her mower was in the shop for repairs. I was so excited – like a kid on Christmas morning – I couldn’t wait for the grass to grow so I could cut it! (Don’t let my neighbor see this article; we don’t want her to get any ideas!)
So, find your “thing”, a little time away from the rest of it, time to reflect and be grateful, time for you!
I’ll save snow blowing the driveway for a future, very different, article!
