Barry's Column

So which came first? – the chicken or the egg? Does happiness come from success (however you measure it) or is success cultivated and enhanced by happiness?

One of the great discoveries I made a few years ago are the TED talks available online (www.TED.com) for your free video enjoyment.  TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (20 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment, and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.

I try to listen to a new TED talk every week and I have my favorites that never fail to enlighten me or inspire me either personally or professionally (Brené Brown and Ken Robinson are a couple of favorites).  Recently I was researching some information I had heard about from a Chamber member and was mentioned in a motivational speaker’s newsletter, and I came across another “good” TED talk. This talk by a Harvard researcher named Shawn Achor addresses the idea of happiness and its effect on our ability to think, perform, be productive and learn. And best (for me) is that he provides some practical tools to help reshape your thinking to get you to a new mindset about happiness and work/success.

So, I encourage you to CLICK HERE and spend 12 minutes learning something that may be beneficial to how you manage, how you parent, and how you interact in the world and how you run your business. Toward the end of his talk, he gives us tools to help become happier and thus healthier (freeze-frame at 11:04 minutes and write them down).

If you recognized this part of my column, it’s because I wrote about this in a past column. If you haven’t seen the video, take a few minutes and watch – you will be glad you did. If you have already watched it, watch it again – you’ll be glad you did.

Happy New Year! The Webster Chamber’s new fiscal year began on July 1.  We are looking at a whole new year of events, exciting programs for our members at the monthly Breakfast Before Business meetings and the educational Power Hours.  In addition, we welcome new board members, Rose Gabriele-Angell, Steve Conger and Tim Shortsleeve.

Congratulations as well to all of the recipients of longevity in business awards!  It is quite an accomplishment maintaining and growing a business for 25 years and more!  This year we honored 22 businesses! Read more about them HERE on our website.

Breakfast is on Friday, July 26th at the usual time and place – don’t miss the opportunity to gather with the other members and celebrate summer!

I hope you are all enjoying the summer and are staying safe!
