Barry's Column

I like to keep this column to a few hundred words, but for those of you that know me, I am not a man of few words!

There are lots of things happening around the Chamber (and around town) and I want to touch on a few.

First, the newsletter has a little overhaul and a new look. We hope that being website based, we will be able to update more readily and that the format will make it a little easier for you to navigate. Let us know what you think.

Daylight Savings kicks in this weekend (the 10th) so don’t forget you lose an hour of sleep on Saturday night – ugh.

We had to cancel Power Hour on “How to Deal with Difficult People” due to the weather last week, but the Education Committee is working on getting it rescheduled.

Our next Eat, Drink, and Connect will be on March 14th (see Important Dates to Remember for details).

The Eastside Area Expo is March 20th – if you want a display table you need to hurry before they are sold out!

Our breakfast this month will be at Willink Middle School on March 23rd at 7:00 AM. I am looking forward to a great program by the school district. They are going to give us updates on information you need to know. Our excellent school district is one of the reasons that Webster is a community of choice! Please make sure you RSVP soon as we need to let the food service people how many people they are feeding.

In June we will be recognizing Chamber businesses that are celebrating milestone anniversaries (25 years or more in 5-year increments). If you are a business celebrating 25, 30, 35, etc. years in 2018, make sure to let Barb know so we can honor you at the June breakfast.

Lastly, I would like to mention some Chamber members being honored this month. Penny Swingly, Cheryl Nelan, and Bill Koopman are all in the news this month. Please take a minute to click on their name and see read about your fellow Chamber members.

Let’s hope that when Daylight Savings takes that hour away, that the snow goes with it!

Business of the Month

Penny is co-owner of Mane Reflections Salon located at 31 West Main Street; which is a full-service hair salon. Penny has co-owned the salon with Pat Sidoti since 2003 but originally started her salon in 1992 at 5 West Main St with a salon named Cut, Color and Tan. Penny’s first salon was open 7 days a week with 9 tanning beds, 4 styling stations and a mailroom. Her husband Gus threatened to padlock the place because she was never home so Penny, Pat and Frank headed up to Mane Reflections and rented chairs and then Pat and Penny went into a partnership.

Penny has been involved with Relay for life, Webster BID and the chamber for many years. She has supported Recovery Fitness, Webster Rotary, local Boy Scouts, Making Strides and many other local establishments needing help.

She enjoys spending time at her cottage, scrapbooking, card making, yard sales and since she and Gus own a ‘31 Ford Model A they attend many car shows.

Penny is also known for working the streets at the 4 corners of Webster Village to raise money for the Relay for life!

Congratulations to Penny Swingly of Mane Reflections as the Webster Chamber of Commerce’s March Business of the Month!

Rochester Business Journal Announces Inaugural Women of Excellence Recipients

Rochester, N.Y., Rochester Business Journal selected Cheryl Nelan, president of CMIT Solutions of Monroe as an inaugural Women of Excellence recipient.

Established this year, the Women of Excellence awards recognize 34 high-achieving women for their career accomplishments, community involvement, leadership and sustained commitment to mentoring. Winners were selected by the editor and publisher of the Rochester Business Journal.

The Women of Excellence awards program was created by the Rochester Business Journal to recognize women at the top of their careers who are committed to professional excellence and community service and who demonstrate the positive impact of mentoring.

In addition, six women will be inducted into the Circle of Excellence. The Circle of Excellence recognizes women of longstanding, notable success in the community who are leading the way for other women.

"This year's Women of Excellence honorees inspire those around them through their actions, words and deeds. They have achieved personal success, but they also contribute to bettering the communities in which they work and live," said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, publisher of the Rochester Business Journal. "Their commitment to mentoring the next generation while also balancing the many facets of their busy lives makes them role models for all. The Rochester Business Journal is honored to recognize their accomplishments."

The Women of Excellence awards will be presented Wednesday, April 11, at an awards celebration from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center, 123 East Main Street in Rochester. Winners will be profiled in a magazine that will be inserted into the April 13 issue of the Rochester Business Journal and will be available online at www.rbj.net. The event hashtag is #RBJWomenofExcellence.

For more information about sponsorships and tickets for the Rochester Business Journal's Women of Excellence awards, visit www.rbj.net or call 585-363-7270.
