Barry's Column
Writing this column always starts the same way. I open Microsoft Word and click on “blank document”. Then I say to myself: “What do you have to say that anybody wants to read?” This coming from the guy who always has lots to say! So, here are some thoughts off the top of my head.
I have liked the Webster Chamber of Commerce for a long time. Not always, but for a long time. Before I became a member I didn’t see that there could be any value in joining and I thought it was wiser to save the expense – even though it wasn’t (and still isn’t) a very large expense.
Then someone “talked me into it” and I became a member. It was then, slowly, that I began to see the value: the networking, referrals to my business from the Chamber, new business from my Chamber website listing, news and information that helped me run my business and grow my business, seeing the community enhancements such as the “Webster” bushes along Route 104 or the welcome signs coming into town, the creation of the Webster Village BID, the Case for Business Report that called for centralized economic development efforts and centralized “core” development of retail space (now Town Center), the Chamber’s ultimate creation of the Webster Economic Development Alliance, the informal mentoring from other members that freely shared advice, but most of all, the sense of connection to my community, belonging to an organization that is passionate about helping each other and helping Webster. Along the way, I gained friends and colleagues, project partners, and developed what are now life-long relationships.
I was elected to the Board of Directors, then appointed Corporate Secretary, and then by some strange alignment of the stars, I was asked to come work for the Chamber as an employee and then asked to run the day-to-day operations as President/CEO. I am passionate about the Chamber and I know many of you are too! And, I think we have good reason to be passionate.
The Webster Chamber provides great value for a small monetary investment (about the cost of a Starbucks Caffe Latte per week) but it does require some human investment. Attending a breakfast or an Eat, Drink, and Connect, or a Power Hour or workshop, or spending five minutes reading this newsletter or the Chamber’s email blasts.
If you are reading this newsletter, it’s likely that you are already making both of those investments and have some of the same passion. So, I am asking for one more human investment: share your belief that the Webster Chamber is a good investment; that the Chamber provides value, networking, business leads, and a great connection to our community. Ask a fellow business owner if they want to reap some of those benefits as well. Share this newsletter, share a link to your Chamber Webster listing, invite them to a Power Hour or a breakfast. And don’t forget there is something in it for you too – the fulfillment of helping that business prosper and belong, as well as the $50 the
Chamber gives you for the referral!
